Well, yesterday was. It was a little bit bummer: my car wouldn't start, overwhelming classes and one of my dad's dogs died. It ended up better, AAA and Ashton saved the day.

Either way, I finished Annie's REAL TALK mittens. I used size 5s with a worsted weight so they are really really stiff and warm.

I used Debbie Stoller's new yarn, Full o' Sheep. So far, I am really impressed with her yarns. I am using Alpaca Love for my Beatnik, so I've tried most of them. Full o' Sheep reminds me a lot of Lamb's Pride worsted weight, but better because it doesn't have that annoying alpaca element that sheds everywhere. The colors are super saturated and awesome.

In case you don't know what REAL TALK MEANS (and you probably shouldn't if you are a sane individual) listen to this gem of modern music.

I found this Free People dress at VDO. I love it. I wore it with my zany and colorful OKM sweater and my new thrifted boots. My friend Adam and I found them at Unique thrift. They are fur lined and so majestic- we declared it BOOT DAY.

My favorite cousin, Katelyn, is pregnant with twins. I am making her a BUNCH of stuff because that's what I do. I think I am going to make her distinctly different things for each baby because I'm sure she will be sick of two of everything.

I am using the 200 Crochet Block book and Caron's Country, a wool blend. I have never used it before but I must say, I LOVE the muted color palate and how the fabric drapes.

OKM sweater and a wool pencil skirt from Goodwill.

I found this shirt (?) at Fabulous Finds in Streetsboro, Ohio. The back is fine mesh and the front is sequined with a crazy beaded fringe. It was just ridiculous enough for me to love. And again, the yacht pants that I wear too often.

I made this silly cat from Lion Brand's fisherman's wool.

Another adVenture Data kitty for a coworker.

I started knitting Beatnik from the most recent knitty. It is going to be a labor of love, but I am looking forward to it. I won't be able to work on it at work, so it will take considerably longer. I can't be on the phone with people and read complex cables.

I'm using Debbie Stollers new Red Heart Yarn, Alpaca Love. It is 80% wool and 20% alpaca and so far I am very impressed. It is going to take me 9 skeins but it is pretty affordable at $4.99 a pop.

I am making the snapdragon tam from Ysolda Tegue's Whimsical Little Knits 2. What a great pattern set! I am making the Peak's Island Hood but I hit a rough patch and could not devote enough attention to it at work to fix it. So it's on the backburner- along with this because I can't telemarket and cable. Just saying.

I am making this for a professor's daughter. I don't know if I can part with it. I might have to start making these for adults. How cute would that be? Also, how much do you think I should charge her? I am no good at pricing my stuff.

In other news, Annie, Stephen and I tried to make bacon.

I bought thins amazing dress at a garage sale for $5. It has a layer of tulle with flowers and it is poufy as hell. I wanted to wear it to the Slackers show, so I made my friend Jack dress up with me. We looked so cool walking to the show that strangers literally took our picture.

The show was incredible, as always. I think I have seen them like 7 times or something? It makes me nostalgic for those times. Marc and I always get so pumped.

The weather is getting colder

So far I can get away with my usual attire if I add tights or a sweater.

The shirt is a stretchy and oddly textured almost mustard-lime from Goodwill. The skirt is a really lovely and intensely purple suede pencil skirt that is a little bit too big for me so it slings low. I kind of like it.

I don't know where I got the tights, but I am digging the diamonds.

I bought this dress from my friend Lauren. She is the coolest and sells vintage clothing out of her van. When she gets a site, I will link it here 10,000 times because she has some really really cool stuff.

This dress is shimmery and wonderful. I wore it with goodwill boots and a yellow necklace I traded for at an art show last year.

I traded my new work friend Hannah a macrame necklace for this hat. It suits her so well.

I cast on 84 with a US 7. After the ribbing, I switched to a US 9 and increased by adding yarn overs around every other knit stitch. I used stash yarn and just went crazy. I think it shows. This picture was taken from her facebook, she gave me permission to be that creepy.

It feels good to see her wearing it every day at work. This hat has sparked many more orders:

I made this out of Berocco Comfort. It says Z- Dubz or something, the kid's nickname. The checkers were fun to do.

I wore this yesterday and got a few compliments on it. The skirt is from a garage sale and reminds me of Hannukah wrapping paper. The waistband is velvet. Ugh, love.

In other news, I am almost finished with my tube top. I changed that pattern up a little from the original, but I think it will better suit me. Last night at work I got a bit further than this and added a thick red icord through the eyelets. To tie in back :)

I started this top a few days ago at work. It is made of a linen cotton blend, which means the first row makes you want to die.

I am altering it a tad, and I plan to wear it either tucked into high-waisted skirts or perhaps with jeans?

Either way, I had to frog about 2 inches of it because the lace pattern was published wonky in Fitted Knits. I felt that something was off, but I was at work and I wasn't thinking too deep about it.

I am going to post more. I don't have a camera, but I'll make due.

It seems weird to say, but sometimes I get a bit too hyped up to knit. I have so much energy sometimes that it is hard to sit down and create instead of running my crazy mouth all the time. But the thing is, sitting down, breathing in and out with my stitching helps me calm down. So lets see if being obsessed with knitting again helps out my senior year of college. Crazy, huh?

Either way, I quit working my shitty big-box retail job and started working as the devil herself. I kid, but pretty much. I do push-polls. For republicans.

But I can knit. So, it I am a productive devil at least.

This sweater is Sonnet from an old issue of Knitty. I am knitting it with Louisa Harding 'Hulda' I bought at Tuesday Morning. Did you know they had nice yarn there? Maybe it is hit or miss.

I am doing 2 rows of each color and doing bits of seed stitch instead of the recommended box stitch. I should have enough to finish the sweater, but I might have to skimp on the sleeves. Maybe I will make one sleeve cream and the other brown? Decisions, decisions

But I am happy to making these kinds of decisions again.

I haven't bought any yarn in months. I am still barely making a dent in the stash I acquired when the knitting store I'd worked at for over a year closed.

Old news, I made this sweater years ago. I'd say I wear this more than any other sweater I've knit.

I finished the Dad socks.

It is funny how each sock pooled differently. I guess that is the charm of hand-dyed skeins. My Dad really liked them. I have enough yarn leftover to make another small pair.

I used this terrible pattern from Lion Brand. The instructions are off and don't make much sense. The neck would have been way too small for a living child. Because I like my brother a whole lot, I adjusted it by not putting buttons up by the neck.

He just turned 2.

My cousins, Brynn and Nikki are the coolest dressers I know. My aunt Sherry lets them wear whatever they want, as you can tell. They are so rad.

I finished knitting the first dad sock. We'll say it's the left one. I still need to graft the toe, but I am needle-less.

I can never forget how to START the kitchener stitch. Maybe that would be a good tattoo? I have been thinking about getting a knitting tattoo someday, but I want the meaning of it to apply to knitting and life. Maybe just a row of knitting onto my skin (like little Vs) or maybe garter stitch. Or maybe a tiny sock being unraveled? Who knows. I have time.

These socks are for my dad. When the yarn store I worked at went out of business, he was nice enough to put up a lot of money for me to buy a lot of nice yarn for wholesale prices. So, basically I got about 800 dollars worth of cashmere, silk, mohair and other glorious fibers you can't find at Joann.

As a result, he and my stepmother are getting super super fancy knitted gifts.

Sometimes, people ask me where I buy my yarn. Nowadays, I tell them I am set until the apocalypse. I am only half kidding. I'm sure you knitters know, that sometimes you just "have" yarn. Yarn that you certainly did not buy, yarn that just kind of appeared in your house one day.

Craft Show

This weekend, my friend Jamie and I set up a booth at a local craft show.

The craft show ran next to some free christmas tree festival that drew a lot of people. Unfortunately, the $2 admission fee kept many people away.

Not many people were making money, and a lot of people left. The people next to us left early so we expanded our booth on the last day.

I basically made enough money to eat, drive and have a booth.

It wasn't all bad, Jamie and I both got a lot of knitting done.

I traded hats for some really cool stuff made by other local artists.

The women who made these were super cool, they even invited Jamie and I to come over to their studio to learn how to make them!

I am pretty much in love with my new light switch plate. All the stuff this guy makes is awesome. If I had a buncha money I'd buy a mirror or two, it reminds me of dripping metal. Defitintly worth checking out.

My mom and both of my grandmothers showed up, which was cool. I was lucky enough to snap a picture of me and Adele Berry. As you can see, she is wearing a scarf I once made her.

All in all, I think I will do another craft show as long as I can guarantee a young, hip crowd. My target market is really composed of people like my friends and I. (Although my friends don't really count, they usually get this stuff for free.) I met really cool local artists and got to make fun of a lot of corny country art. So even though I did not make very much money at all, it is worth another try. This time, however, I will try to ensure that each piece is really special.

New additions to the SAND Castle

Well, our TV broke. I took it apart, hoping to find some ON/OFF switch accidentally toggled. That wasn't the case. The TV was from 1996.

...So what does this brilliant babe do? Go out and get an even OLDER set.
For free. Off the internet.

In my defense, I did not KNOW this is the TV I was getting. The ad said it was a floor model, and for some reason I thought this meant it was used at a store. Yea, I know.

Jill and I arrived at our destination after I bone-head-ed-ly drove 30 minutes out of the way. I expected to fit it in the back seat of my trusted 02' Camry. The family laughed at me.

Luckily, these people were about the nicest people I could have ever imagined. They even threw in an extra, smaller TV and a birdcage I'd offhandedly declared liking.

They offered up their bungee chords, straps and blankets to make sure the TV got to our house unharmed.

We needed like 2.5 dudes to lift it.

It really does belong in our house, where most of the technology is from the late 70s.

Darling Vest updates

Welp, looks like the darling vest is done. I may try to write a pattern for it, but it might be a tiny bit convoluted. I had to rip out a lot of the left front, but I was able to regain composure.

I think I am going to add cap sleves, maybe a little puffy? Which color do you all think? Purple or green sleeves?

I started the Mrs.Darcy cardigan on Wednesday using stashed malabrigo. I have a little bit less than 3 balls because I used it once for mitten cuffs. As a result, I don't think I will have enough for a whole sweater. I bought some lilac to make the cuffs at work the other day so it should work out.

I've made a few adjustments because the pattern is written for a 34" bust and I am more like a 38. I feel like a linebacker.

Traingle Scarf, New Room Pics

Lately, I have been doing a lot of projects to use up all my odds and ends of yarn.
I made this scarf with bits of Malabrigo and Cascade 220.

With US #11 and worsted weight, cast on 114 stitches.
Row 1: K 55, SSK, Place Marker, K2tog, K55
Row 2: K1, SSK, K to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1
Repeat rows 1 and 2 (Decreasing on both sides of the markers) until 4 stitches remain. Bind off.

I wore this a few nights ago when I went out dancing. The gold lame' top is from some thrift store, and the skirt is an Annie hand-me-down. The purple tights were from Claries of all places.

I finally got around to putting up pictures in my room. I like the staggering.

A few days ago, my dad lent me some pretty epic records. He kept reiterating, "Sarah, I don't want you to lend these to your friends," as if every one of my friends has a turn table and cares deeply about Miles Davis live recordings and Billie Holiday compilations.

Birthday Knits

My girl Nikki turned 20 today, and requested a floppy mustard yellow hat. I bought this yarn at Unique Thrift over the summer, it is Lopi! Imagine that.

As I said, it is super floppy.

My girl Christina turns 20 in a few days as well, so I knit her this scarf lengthwise using leftover yarn. I crocheted ruffles into the purl bumps.

I like it, I hope to make more of them soon.

I know I said before that I hate Berocco Gem, and I still kind of do. Once you drop a stitch with that yarn, you have a split second before the whole thing unravels in knots at your feet. I had a vision for a triangular scarf, so I improvised with this little scarf.

When I finished it, I realized it belonged to my friend Ana.

...She'll rock it with one of the pins my mother forced upon her.

After a week without, we finally have the internet at the new place. I took a few pictures and my room is really messy. They will just have to do for the time being.

My room! I am in love.

My closet it ginormous. I can fit my dresser AND bookcase in there with room to spare.

The door open inward and pissed me off endlessly. I took it off the hinges and crocheted this curtain from coned yarn from OKM. I really love it.

More pics of the JFK/"The John" bathroom soon, but this will have to do. The orange paper is my idea of a funny joke. Well, Alfred's too.

Clothing wise, I have begun to wear this really rad leather jacket I scored at the Ohio City-wide garage sale this summer. It broke the bank at 5 dollars. If you can't tell, it is really fitted. It is brown with a really wide collar.

Last night, it got really cold. I think this is wonderful, because to me it mark a clear transition between summer and fall. Cold means I better crack down. I wore this to my first day of classes. I began thinking about all of my past "first days" and how they compare and progress as time goes on. I liked this one.

Oh yea and kitting and I aren't speaking.

In knitting news, I finished knitting the body of the purple and green vest. I'm going to write up the pattern so it can sort of be followed by someone other than myself. If I know my friend Hannah, she'll want to make it too. So far, I am really pleased with it.

OH AND I STEEKED.

Since all of my clothes are packed away, my selection was pretty sparce for a night out. (Hell, you should see the spaghetti stained jean shorts I am wearing now as I type this at the library) I put on my trusty' overalls and a green beater. I talked my way out of a ticket, got into dance night for free and lost and found something valuable. It was a good night.

This vest will be spectacular

I started my vest today. I have never been more excited by a project.

I am using Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino and a US#6. I was almost tempted to go up to a 7, but I wanted to pack a lot of detail into the vest.

I a loosely basing it around this vest from Urban Outfitters. I am copying the measurements, but the collar will be way different.

Good news! I am about 2 hours away from being done with my gig as a test knitter! I can knit stuff for myself, Annie and my *new* apartment.

Today was the last day of our sale, so I stocked up on yarn majorly. I bought yarn for 2 vests and an afghan. Expect pictures soon, also of the new desk I painted for my new room.

But in clothing news:

I bought this dress at VDO, and aside from a small red stain, it is perfect. I am in love with the collar and green stripes.

I wore this slightly ridiculous get-up to a party the other day. Yes, those are vintage gold-studded furry leopard print high-waisted hot-shorts. I might be their only fans.

These are the only shoes I will ever need again. They make the best clicking noises, and are the prefect blend of femininity and masculinity. They were 3 dollars or so at Unique Thrift.

Okay. Done spending money forever.

Oh, and that table? It's at the city dump. I never want to look at grout again.

Whisper Cardigan

In the past few days, I was able to finish my whisper cardigan, at last.
Using a cone of fingering weight yarn from Salvation Army, I made the smallest size using a US#7 circular needle. The pattern was really well written, I found it in the spring issue of Interweave Knits.

The construction is really interesting. The back is worked sleeve to sleeve. After, stitches are picked up for the collar. The back is knit down from the collar using short rows.

I have enough yarn to make about a billion more things. Any suggestions?

I bought this dress a few years ago at Suite Lorain, and it has been my go-to fancy dress ever since. I wore it to my aunt's wedding last night and I love it more than ever.

It has a scooped back with a satin bow. The dress is a nude color with a dark crisscrossed netting over it. The sleeves have satin edging.

It was 5:06 p.m. and I was on my way to my dear friend Nikki's house. I saw a sign for an estate sale, and decided to press my luck. I found a belt, and went up the stairs. There were a bunch of old board games, but it seemed like a dud. Then, the woman came upstairs and told me they were getting ready to leave. "Do you like old clothes?" she asked. I said of course. She then led me to an ENTIRE closet filled with vintage dresses. Good ones and amazing condition. I nearly cried. I began throwing the ones I wanted on the floor in a frenzy.

I ended up getting 30 or so dresses for about 36 bucks. i literally just gave them all the money I had in my wallet and split.

Oddly enough, all but 2 fit. I usually have trouble with vintage dresses because (in my opinion) I have an unusually large ribcage. This one is my favorite. Red roses, black buttons and a white collar. Love.

I have worked 7 of the past 9 days. I have made countless hats and mittens, I am waiting for my new book assignment. This time, I get to DESIGN.

A man hat and girl mittens. Plymouth encore.

My mitten pattern:
Worsted weight, US#6 DPN
CO 33 stitches, 11 on each needle. Work 22 rows in a K2 P1 rib. Work 9 rows in stockinette.
Thumb Gusset:
Knit all stitches on needle 1, K 5 stitches on second needle, pm, M1, K1, M1, pm, K5, K all stitches on needle 3
Row 1: k
Row 2: K to marker, slip marker, M1, k to marker, M1, slip marker, k to end
Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice.
Knit all stitches on needle 1, k5, place next 11 stitches onto waste yarn, k5, k all on needle 3. 32 stitches remain, work in stockinette stitch for 20 rows.
K6, k2tog around. K 1 round. k5, k2tog around. K 1 row. K4 k2tog around. K3, k2tog around. k2, k2tog around. K1, k2tog around, k2tog around. 8 stitches remain. Thread yarn through and weave in ends.
Place the held thumb stitches on 2 dpns. Pick up 2 stitches along mitten edge. 14 thumb stitches. Work 10 rows, k2tog around. thread the 7 remaining stitches and weave in ends.

Two of my coworkers, Anne and Janet are making the Whisper Cardigan from Interweave Knits, Spring 2009. Inspired, I cast on last night using a tweedy coned wool I bought at Salvation Army for really cheap. The gauge is about right. I am not too concerned. It looks nice and rustic, and I am considering embroidering it when I am finished.

I'm finished with one sleeve already, it goes pretty quick.

Well, my hands have really been bothering me. Rather than, I don't know, stop knitting, I've opted to try other ways to pass the time.

I bought this goofy vintage yarn at Unique Thrift.

I decided to make a sweater. Yes, a sweater in neon bulky yarn from the 70s.

It only took a movie and a half!

Size 19 needles. I am serious.

I wish I could say I planned for all the stitch pattern lines to align properly. This sweater is part math, part witchcraft.

Well, I still have to sew the pockets in place, but I would rather do that after I've blocked it.

I have carpal tunnel. It really, really sucks. I am 20 years old and have a whole life of knitting ahead of me.

I have these lame blue gloves I wear when I knit, but I don't think they help very much.

I could go to a doctor about it, but the doctor would just tell me to stop.

Bought this dress for a buck at a church yard sale. I love love love it. The glasses came from a bizzaro estate sale.

Noro Silk Garden Sock Scarf

I finished this a while ago, but I hadn't photographed it until today. I am not pleased with the pictures, but whatever. I haven't knit anything new, and my left hand is numb from knitting practically 8 hours a day for the book sweater.

It is the Wavelength by Lime & Violet. I used one skein of Noro Silk Garden Sock and a C hook. It was a grand time.

Cascade 220 and I have spent some quality time together, as of late.

This Friday, I started work on the commissioned piece for a friend's knitting book. I am using a really bright blue shade of Cascade 220, but that is all I will say as of now. I think that IS all I can say.

I knit sleeves for it last summer. My brother told me the reason it broke was because of the yarn but I won't believe him.

Yesterday I went to Nikki's, and we discovered we have the same skirt. We are lame enough to think it is amusing to both wear it to a party tonight and act dramatic. Our styles are super different so I am interested to see what she pairs it with.

I bought this dress at the salvation army yesterday and I am love. It is actually two different dresses, each too see through to wear alone.

I need to stop shopping, I have too much clothing. I need to alter a bunch of stuff the summer and save money. So I am starting my 2nd anual YARN FAST.

I will not buy ANY yarn until August 1st.
That is a promise.

I cannot give up thrifting, simply because I move into my new place in 94 days and I need to collect ridiculous things to put in it.

Dexter, finally finished

After about 8 billion years, I have finally finished Dexter.

I had a lot of problems with this sweater, every single one of them my own fault. There is nothing wrong with the pattern. There is something wrong with me. I got the wrong gauge, made the wrong size the first time. I must have started this sweater 4 times before I got it right.

After blocking it, the sweater became a bit too wide. I'm going to remedy this soon by placing ties on the inside to cinch the back a little bit.

I knit the flower flat and seamed it up until that point. After than, I used the magic loop method to complete them.

The buttons are from Ohio Knitting Mills, a really cool place you should probably check out if you like sweaters and vintage fashion.

As you can tell, I am back in sunny Cleveland, Ohio for the summer. I don't move into my own place for another 97 days. Not that I am counting or anything.

Today, I am starting another Coachella with more yarn from my grandma. I am using Berocco Gem in a not hideous color. I am making an extra small and I might run out of yarn. I guess if it is cute enough I will track down another ball.

I am trying to do a lot of personal knitting while I can, because in a few days (hopefully not that many more) I will be starting work on the test/sample knitting.

Last night, Dana and I watched Casper and reminisced about childhood. I know I am not old enough to legitimately talk about being a child, but I was 6 when it came out so I feel it is all right.

Anyways, I knit during the film.

I have made this bunny a few times before, but I have always given them away. Not this one though, this one is for keepsies.

I am using Dolcetto a Joann sensations yarn from my limited almost empty dorm room stash.

In other news, I finished one of my spring forward socks, and also Dexter! After blocking, it ended up being kind of big but I guess I am okay with it. I might reinforce the neck edge a bit, and I will take plenty of pictures after that. The colors turned out really lovely.

This is Coachella, knit in Berocco Suede Tri-color. My grandma gave me a whole mess of yarn, and the pattern calls for it. It is a real shame the color is so ugly. All I can hope is that when I wear it is so ugly it can only be called bohemian.

I should have made an XS. My bust measurement is about 37.5, so I made a 36. It is too big. I'll make the 32 next time. In a less hideous color.

It might be cute with the right outfit, but not now. This sweater is the literal color of vomit.

I am well aware this is not the right bra.

...oh yea and I got a test knitting job. I am on my way to knit celebritydom. Now is your chance to say you were a fan before I became too mainstream.

Today I finished a calorimetry with the leftovers from my socks. I used a number 4 needle and followed the pattern exactly. I am quite fond of it...

In addition, I made a square for my mohair granny square scarf.

I am using "Flore" by Plassard. I have never seen it before in stores, I got it from my grandmother. I don't think she intended for these colors to go together, but I adore them. It looks somewhat like pop-art to me. I haven't decided what color to connect them, as I am dealing with a very limited supply. Maybe I will check ebay? Have any of you ever tried that?

I knit this basic hat for my friend Zack. The only fancy thing I did was make a mock cable on the knit parts of the ribbing. So: K2 P2 ribbing on row 1. Row 2: mock cable, k2

The other day, I wore this:

Orange jacket from the Village Discount Outlet, purple dress from goodwill, purple tights from Claire's, and orange flats from Goodwill as well.

Oh yea, and my black belt that is part of my uniform.

I FINALLY DID THE CHART RIGHT!!!

I knit it back and forth after much trouble with dpns, magic loop, etc.

Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the sleeve. It will be the first Sunday I've had off in months. I am so pumped. Campus is super empty because of the holiday so I am spending the night cozy and alone in my tiny box of a dorm room. I feel very content to do nothing. Not that I've been the picture of productivity lately, but still.

As wonderful a sweater I think it will be, I am sure having trouble.
My row gauge is way off, I wouldn't have room for the bottom plaid even if I wanted it.
I can only pick up about 180 stitches for the button band, instead of the 370 or so the pattern calls for.
I made a medium, tried it on and had to unravel about 400 yards or so and start all over with a small.

I'm adjusting the pattern everywhere because of this. It is my own fault and there is nothing wrong with the pattern. Even with all of my troubles, I suspect I will be among the first people on Ravelry to finish.

The colors look amazing, and I am very pleased with them

If I make it through, I am sure I will wear this sweater everyday of my life until I die.

I am finally finished with these socks,

...and I love them.

I love the twisted stitches and the way the pattern continues onto the heel.

I used US#2's and Pagewood Farm Glacier Bay Hand Dyed Sock Yarn purchased at Miss Chickpeas Funky Fibers.

The first sock went smoothly, the second one not so much. I ripped it back at least three times. I kept forgetting to use the flat chart and not the round one.

I don't know if I've ever blogged this, but I often wear this flower in my hair. I'm thinking about writing up a pattern soon or start selling them.

That picture shows the red my mother put in my hair when I got it cut. It is pretty subtle and suits my style and fair complexion.

The other night, I wore this to a party:

Nikki made the skirt from the leftovers from a vintage dress she hemmed for me. It was originally floor length and looked like Cher had thrown up on it. The green shirt is from gabes, along with the black leggings and gold shoes.

One of my good friends is turning 19, so I made her this scarf.

She really liked black and red, so I hope she likes it.

I used 2 skeins of black Plassad Flore and a little bit of Mohair 500 for the red flowers. The mohair is suprisingly soft.

I chained 12 and worked 11 single crochet stitches. The next row, I used double crochet and so on. I just sort of winged the flowers.

Yarn is taking over my room.

A non-knitting update

I found these awesome high-waisted green linen shorts at goodwill. The white tshirt just appeared in my room. I didn't buy it and neither did Annie. Who knows.

The weather here in Kent, Ohio has been surprisingly warm these past few days. I can always tell it is spring when the jesus pamphlet people are back. Oh yea, and when the creepy lunch man tells me he's glad to see "the girls out therein their shorts and skirts."

Anyways, we decided to run away. On this journey, there was to be no talk of relationships, jobs or school. Rules are rules.

When we first got onto the train tracks, my friend Sarah asked "What do we do if a train comes?"
And I said "Uh...I think we'd hear it coming long before it hit us."

Just then, we saw a train coming around the bend. We hadn't noticed because we thought the bridge was always lit in such a manner. We got out of the way and it was amazing. I've never been that close before.

We walked along the train tracks for a few miles and then turned back. It felt right.

(I think Annie has been reading a bit too much Babysitters Club lately.)

We hoped to meet another traveling band of disgrunteled twenty-somethings but we did not. I wish my life was more like a short story.

In knitting news, I am trying to knit a skein a day on Dexter. Today, however I am holing up in the library researching stuff for a paper. You can tell by this blog that I am doing a real good job of this.

New Taiyo...

When this colorway of Noro Taiyo came into Miss Chickpea's, I knew I had to make a model out of it. Because spring is coming up, we needed something to display. I have made a Cloud Bolero before for Annie, and I wanted to try the pattern again with a more interesting yarn. Noro Taiyo fit the bill, it is made of cotton, wool, silk and nylon. It is very lightweight and ranges from a worsted to a bulky. And of course, Noro has amazing colors.

I used #13 straight needles. Last time I knit it, I discovered that when I used a cicular needle, the yarn overs would jump over my stitch markers and cause the lovely wave pattern to get kind of wonky. This time, I only had to start over once.

A very quick knit, and highly recommended. I plan on making one for myself out of stash yarn.

Handspun Tam (with pattern)

Because I have really thick, curly hair, I often have trouble finding hats that look good on me. As a knitter, this is especially troublesome because I end up having to give a lot of hats away.

I bought this handspun at Cleveland's Bazaar Bizarre a few months back. I wound it up, And for a while I just sat and looked at it because it was so beautiful. I felt like nothing I could do as a knitter would serve it justice.

I finally decided to start a hat with it. I finished the hat with little to spare, and noticed it was far too big. I ripped it out and started again and found success.

Gauge= 3 stitches per inch
With US# 11s, I casted on 54 stitches and worked in 1x1 ribbing for about an inch.
To increase to the tam size, I knit 2, m1 all around. I knit in stockinette for about 3.5 inches.
After that, I decreased 1 stitch so I had an even 80 stitches. I knit 14, k2tog around.
Then, I knit 13, k2tog all around. Then 12, 11 and so on. When 5 stitches remained, I drew the yarn through them and fastened off.

Really red socks

It seems like I have been working on these socks forever. That is fine because I love them so so much. The pattern is pretty intuitive and once you go through one pattern repeat you can pretty much guess what will happen next. The twisted stitches are a nice touch. I really like Cookie A's patterns, they are never boring. I highly recommend this pattern.

I am using "Pagewood Farm Glacier Bay Hand Dyed Sock Yarn" that I bought at work. The colorway is called "Really Red" and it is ever-so-slightly variegated.

I am almost done with the cuff of the second sock. Finished pictures soon!

I have been absent for a long while, and a lot has changes since August. I started a blog for my friends and I about our new house and started thinking about how I sort of miss blogging. I'm going to try to update this more often, but I won't make any promises. I have a lot of work this semester, on top of a weekly column in my college newspaper. I want to post outfits I am proud of and also talk about knitting and stuff.
That being said:

Some black dress Annie gave me, fishnets and old sneakers with holes in the soles.

I made this a long time ago for Annie, using Knitty's 3 Tams pattern. I used Lambs pride and Noro Silk Garden. Both she and I are very pleased with it.

General Craftage

At the beginning of the summer, Rosa and I vowed to make these dollhead paperweights from this craft book she has. Now that she has about a week left and I have 17 days, we finally got around to it.

First, we decapitated dolls that we bought for $.99 at the thrift store, and used a steak knife to saw off their necks.

Then, we filled the with plaster.

Fake artsy-fartsy picture of the plaster drying, for time elapsing purposes.

We spray painted them black

Sprayed them with water-
And then added a layer of bronze!!

...but I am on a diet.
Yes, a YARN diet.
Until July. It's going to be especially difficult because I have a 10% coupon for my favorite yarn store, and my two best friends need to buy their college yarn.
I have way too much yarn, and not enough money. I have car insurance payments to match my new car (which at first seemed charming because the car would take me to yarn) and a brand new speeding ticket that I cannot knit my way out of. The downside of not being at college, there are no people to buy my stuff! Oh and then my engine check light has been on for a few weeks now...
My new job is pretty good, but stressful. It is never NOT busy. In my situation, this is swell because I need all the tips I can get.

I am working on the most wonderful malabrigo sweater, look out for it soon.

Strawbeary bear!

I finally finished my "Strawbeary" from the book "Amigurumi: Super Happy Crochet Cute" by Elisabeth A. Doherty. It took me so so long, but it was so so worth it.

I HATED making the soles of the feet. For some odd reason the pattern decided to be really difficult at the very end of the doll. I must have restarted the soles 20 times, no joke.

I don't recommend crocheting fun fur at a small gauge. Hell, I don't even recommend fun fur.

I am very satisfied with how she turned out.
I am very glad I am finished.

Malabrigo cardigan!

I knit this SLIGHTLY based off of Wicked. I used about 3.4 skeins of malabrigo in the blue, and one of each of the green and yellow with some to spare. I used #7's.
I love how it turned out.
Basically, I cast on about as many stitches wicked had and split it down the middle. Instead of a 2x2 cable rib, I opted for a 3x3 rib with improvised bobbles. For the button band, I picked up my slipped stitches with a #8 needle, and casted off with a 13 so it laid flat.

I'm in love with it.

If I were to do this over, I wouldn't subtract stitches to account for the button band. It is a tiny bit too small, nothing a bit of blocking won't fix though.

I didn't die. I just got really caught up with school work.
Anyways, here are a few things that I've finished since I dropped off of the face of the earth::

A ruffley ascot!
I made it out of ONline Linie 194 Solo, and used 2 skeins. I believe I used 12 stitches? One side is pink, the other is purple. I made it in two pieces and sewed them up.

It's great yarn, but very expensive. I got it 40% off, so it wasn't that bad.

Also, I finished my rusted root. I used 3 skeins of lambs pride cotton flece. it's really light and summery.

Notice how the neckline gets wonky because of the lace pattern? Thats because I am a colossal idiot. I noticed online, everyone had a ribbed neckline. Since the pattern didn't BEGIN with this, i assumed it was some mod that mostly everyone had done.

I thought I was soooo much smarter. "Oooohhhhh.....I'll just cast on and rib for a bit before! What an easier way!!!!"

I got the end, and it told me to pick up stitches for the neckline.

grrr....

Now my neckline is all wonky and everyone who FOLLOWED the directions has a nice scoop neck. It didn't occur to me that sometimes designers have reasons for seemingly silly steps.

Since the picture, I have slip stitched around the neckline and it's a tad bit better, but still wonky. Oh well...

At least this microspun crochet baby hat for my little BROTHER came out cute!

Cloud Bolero for Annie

I made this for Annie after she presented me with four balls of Lion Cashmere Blend. I'd always wanted to use it, but for $8.99 an 84 yard ball, ONLY 14% cashmere, plus NYON it wasn't ever worth it. Hell, malabrigo is 11 for 216 yards of PURE merino.

All in all, an easy knit I suggest using straight needles or the stitch markers tend to leap over the yarn overs and mess up the lace and stitch counts.

I used a size 13 to get the correct gauge.
